Medical Student
University of Iowa Health Care Department of Neurosurgery
My name is Pujit Mekala, and I am a second-year medical student at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. I have been working with multiple mentors in the Department of Neurosurgery, including Dr. Matthew Howard, Dr. Jeremy Greenlee, and Dr. Patrick Hitchon. I grew up around the Des Moines area and played varsity tennis at Waukee High School. After my sophomore year of high school, I joined the University of Iowa on a full ride through the Bucksbaum Early Entrance Academy and obtained a BS in Neuroscience. During my time at the University of Iowa, I have worked in multiple clinical and basic science research labs in neuroscience and neurosurgery. I have received research funding during all of my undergraduate years and in the summer after my first year of medical school, when I received the Carver College of Medicine Summer Research Fellowship. I will be applying to the Neurosurgery Match in the Fall of 2027. My research interests include spine, skull base, endovascular neurosurgery, and developing innovative tools. I enjoy playing tennis, reading, and spending time with my family.
