Medical Officer
National Neuroscience Institute, Singapore
Benjamin Loke, MD, MSc. Medical Officer, National Neuroscience Institute, Singapore.
I am a Medical Officer in Neurosurgery with formal training in laboratory research and translational cancer biology. On top of being actively involved in the operating room, neurosurgical ICU and wards, I am involved in research on intracranial mesenchymal tumours with FET-CREB gene fusions, pituitary apoplexy, and the role of debate-style lectures for neurosurgical education. My current H-index is 6, with 185 citations.
Before going into clinical medicine, I was trained in biomedical research. In college and graduate school, my research on CIC-DUX4 fusion sarcoma, Wilms tumour, fibroadenomas, and phyllodes tumours led to 6 publications in esteemed journals including International Journal of Cancer and Modern Pathology (Nature Publishing Group). I also obtained a postgraduate certificate in medical technology innovation through the A*STAR Singapore–Stanford Biodesign Programme.
I subsequently earned my MD from the Duke-NUS Medical School, where I undertook electives in neurosurgery and neuroradiology, as well as a dedicated research year developing patient-derived neuroblastoma organoids in the VIVA-KKH Paediatric Solid Tumour Laboratory. This work received the Best Research Presentation (Surgery/Oncology) award at the Duke-NUS Research Week 2023 and was given a platform presentation at the 56th Congress of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology in the United States. I also served as my MD cohort representative, taught juniors and led a paediatric cancer awareness event.
My goal is to train as a neurosurgeon-scientist who will advance the art and science of neurosurgery.
