Michael K. Coffin III, B.S. is an osteopathic medical student at William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine and will enter his fourth year of training next academic year. He is completing a dedicated research year as a Research Fellow in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Cincinnati under the mentorship of Justin Virojanapa, D.O., and Laura Ngwenya, M.D., Ph.D. In this role, he leads the neurotrauma research team’s project meetings, coordinating study updates, timelines, and execution to support projects from development through completion. His work focuses on optimizing care delivery and improving outcomes in traumatic spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury, with emphasis on clinically actionable research that informs acute-care decision-making, including inpatient management, risk stratification, and outcomes assessment. Michael hopes to pursue a career in neurosurgery with a particular focus on neurotrauma, while remaining active in outcomes-oriented research as a clinician–investigator.
