Biography – Professor Dr. Saumitra Sarkar
Professor Dr. Saumitra Sarkar is a distinguished Bangladeshi neurosurgeon, academic leader, and international surgical ambassador with more than two decades of experience in clinical neurosurgery, medical education, and research. He currently serves as Professor of Neurosurgery at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College, Sylhet, one of Bangladesh’s leading tertiary referral centers.
Dr. Sarkar completed his MBBS from Chittagong Medical College in 1995 and later obtained his MS in Neurosurgery from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in 2005. In pursuit of global excellence, he earned prestigious international qualifications including MRCS (Royal College of Surgeons of England and Glasgow), FRCS (Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh), FACS (American College of Surgeons), and IFAANS (American Association of Neurological Surgeons). These credentials reflect his rigorous training and commitment to international standards of neurosurgical care.
Before assuming his current leadership role, Dr. Sarkar served as Associate Professor and Head of Neurosurgery at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital and previously as Assistant Professor at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where he played a key role in strengthening neurosurgical services and postgraduate training. As Professor of the Department of Neurosurgery, he leads a multidisciplinary academic and clinical team delivering advanced care for complex neurosurgical conditions including brain tumors, spinal disorders, pediatric neurosurgery, trauma, and cerebrovascular disease.
Beyond institutional leadership, Professor Sarkar has emerged as a prominent figure in international surgical collaboration. He currently serves as Secretary of the International College of Surgeons (ICS), Bangladesh Section, acting as a bridge between Bangladeshi surgeons and the global surgical community. He holds life memberships in several professional bodies, including the Society of Neurosurgeons of Bangladesh, Association of Surgeons of India (ASI), and the Society of British Neurological Surgeons.
A prolific academician, Dr. Sarkar has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed scientific publications in national and international journals. His research spans a wide range of neurosurgical fields, including cauda equina syndrome, cervical disc disease, posterior fossa tumors, intracranial cysts, and pediatric neurosurgery. His scholarly contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly on neurosurgical planning and service delivery during crisis conditions, received notable professional recognition.
