Medical Student
Wayne State University School of Medicine
With a deep-rooted interest in medicine and a passion for science, I embarked on a journey that led me to pursue a bachelor's degree in chemistry. I now have a strong foundation that equipped me in understanding complex biochemical pathways of diseases, pharmacotherapies, and aids in managing patient care. My motivation to pursue medicine was influenced by personal experiences, including the loss of a parent at an early age. Inspired by these circumstances, I founded the Education for a More Peaceful and Independent Haiti (EMPIH) program to address the challenges faced by Haitian orphans transitioning from orphanages to independent living. This initiative, fueled by desire to mitigate disparities and improve life outcomes was awarded funding from the Davis Projects for Peace Organization.
As a curiosity-driven scientist, now in medical school, I continuously seek new opportunities to challenge my existing knowledge, exploring advancements, techniques, and technologies in the field of neurological and transplant surgery. I am leading an IRB-approved research project that explores the interaction between social determinants of health (SDOH) factors and allostatic load biomarkers, and their combined effect on health outcomes for stroke patients in Detroit. I strongly believe a better understanding of these connections may potentially assist clinicians in implementing more effective interventions to prevent stroke recurrence and new onset in previously healthy individuals with numerous associated allostatic markers and SDOH factors.
Alongside my academic endeavors, I am deeply engaged in the community. I volunteer at student-run free clinics, I tutor youth in Detroit, and I support fellow medical students by tutoring anatomy and with research. Furthermore, I served as a house coordinator for four years, aiming to create a positive learning environment while advocating for student interests. These experiences taught me the indispensable lesson of humility and have given me a clear sense of purpose. Additionally, since I have volunteered in various organizations that improve education, housing, and community services, I believe I have become more knowledgeable and equipped to assist patients facing social challenges beyond their healthcare needs.
Looking ahead, I am eager to undertake a residency focusing on surgery and research. As I continue my journey in medicine, my goal is to empower individuals while making a lasting impact, contributing to positive change in healthcare outcomes for all populations.
