Professor of neurosurgery
University Hospital of Nice, France
Fabien Almairac, MD, PhD, HDR, is a neurosurgeon and Professor of Neurosurgery at Université Côte d’Azur, practicing at Nice University Hospital (CHU de Nice), France. He specializes in neuro-oncology, with more than 15 years of experience in the surgical management of brain tumors and skull base lesions.
His clinical practice focuses on the treatment of diffuse gliomas and tumors involving functional networks. He has extensive experience in awake brain surgery and has routinely performed awake mapping–guided tumor resections for over a decade, with the goal of maximizing extent of resection while preserving neurological and cognitive function, and therefore quality of life.
Prof. Almairac’s research interests lie at the intersection of neuro-oncology, functional neurosurgery, and brain connectivity. He has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications addressing brain tumor surgery, functional brain networks, and connectivity-based approaches. His current work emphasizes the integration of intraoperative direct electrical stimulation mapping with diffusion MRI tractography and cerebral electrophysiology to improve real-time identification of functional networks during tumor resection.
In addition to his clinical and research activities, Prof. Almairac is actively involved in medical education at both the local and national levels in France, contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate neurosurgical training and curriculum development.
His work reflects a commitment to network-based neurosurgical strategies that combine advanced imaging, intraoperative mapping, and translational neuroscience to optimize oncological and functional outcomes.
