Taylor Abel, MD, is Chief of Neurosurgery and Chief of Epilepsy Surgery at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery and Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Abel’s clinical practice focuses on epilepsy surgery, including a significant focus on hemispheric epilepsy surgery, invasive monitoring for seizure localization, and neuromodulation. Dr. Abel started and directs the NIH- and NSF-funded Translational Electrophysiology and Neurosurgery Outcomes Research (TENOR) laboratory that combines sEEG recordings with machine learning/deep learning modeling approaches to investigate how the brain represents auditory and visual sensory input. Dr. Abel’s clinical research compares the effectiveness of epilepsy surgery strategies using decision modeling, cost-effectiveness analysis, and observational approaches. He has won multiple awards for teaching and research mentorship and has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. He currently serves on the board of directors for the American Epilepsy Society and the Pediatric Epilepsy Surgery Alliance.
