Kostas N. Fountas has earned his Medical Degree from the National and Capodistrian University of Athens, Greece. He has been sub-specialized in Stererotactic and Functional Neurosurgery and Epilepsy Surgery, after completing a fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia, in Augusta, GA, USA.
He completed his Postdoctoral Thesis on "Comparative analysis of the results of the pre-operative evaluation of intra-cranial tumors by using Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy and Open or Stereotactic Biopsy” at the University of Patras, Patra, Greece.
He has joined the Faculty of Medicine, School of Health Sciences of the University of Thessaly, in Larisa, Greece since 2007. He has been the Head of the Department of Neurosurgery of the University Hospital of Larisa, since 2009. He has been appointed as visiting Professor of Neurosurgery at the State University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, USA, and the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, GA, USA.
Dr. Fountas has been serving the Hellenic Neurosurgical Society as chief of the Educational Committee, since 2009, while he has been appointed as national representative of the Hellenic Neurosurgical Society to the UEMS, and the senior national delegate to the WFNS, since 2013. He is a founding member of the International Imaging Hydrocephalus Working Group, while he is a member of the Editorial Board of eight scientific journals, and reviewer in 36 neuroscience journals. He is the current President of the Hellenic Neurosurgical Society.
His scientific interests are focused on functional imaging, electrophysiology, and neuro-oncology. He has contributed 263 publications in peer-reviewed journals, as well as more than 30 chapters in international textbooks. He is the editor of two textbooks on “Novel Frontiers of Neuroimaging” and “ Epilepsy Surgery and Intrinsic Brain Tumor Surgery”. Dr. Fountas has given more than 500 oral and more than 350 poster presentations in national and international scientific meetings.
