Isabelle M. Germano, MD, MBA is a tenured Professor of Neurosurgery, Neurology, Oncological Sciences, and Global Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, NY. She serves as Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs and Director of the Comprehensive Brain Tumor Program and the Radiosurgery Program. Dr. Germano earned her medical degree from the University of Turin as valedictorian, with a graduate thesis on brain tumors immunohistochemistry. She also earned an MBA from NYU Stern School of Business, where she subsequently served as an adjunct professor of economics. She completed her neurosurgery training at the University of California San Francisco and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, with fellowships at the Montreal Neurological Institute and the University of Zurich. She then joined the neurosurgery faculty at Mount Sinai, where she established the multidisciplinary brain tumor program and the first neurosurgery laboratory focused on basic and translational brain tumor research. She has served as Principal Investigator on NIH and NCI R01 grants, and her translational research has been funded by the FDA, private foundations, and industry. In her clinical practice, Dr. Germano specializes in multidisciplinary, minimally invasive surgery for brain and spine tumors. She is a pioneer in image-guided, computer-assisted neurosurgery and led several first-in-human studies, including the first gene therapy clinical trial for recurrent glioblastoma in New York State. A recognized leader in brain tumor neurosurgery, Dr. Germano has authored over 180 peer-reviewed publications and six books. She is also an internationally respected educator, having organized, directed, or taught in over 300 neurosurgical training courses in the U.S. and abroad. She is the editor of the first book on Neurosurgery and Global Health (Springer, 2022), leading the collaborative efforts of over 100 neurosurgeons from all five continents. Dr. Germano has received over 50 awards for her contributions to neurosurgery. She serves as Chair of Global Neurosurgery (AANS 2023-2027),and is the immediate Past Chair of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS)/Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) Section on Tumors (2022-2024), Past Chair of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies Education and Training Committee, and Past Chair of the AANS/CNS Section on Women in Neurosurgery. She has held more than 30 additional leadership roles in neurosurgical societies, government agencies, and professional organizations. She is a member of many professional societies, including the American Academy of Neurosurgery and the Society of Neurological Surgeons.
