Nicholas Brandmeir is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute at West Virgnia University. He is originally from the coast of Maine, but attended high school in Palisade, CO on the Western Slope.
Dr. Brandmeir earned his BA from Cornell University in 2002 and his MS in Zoology at the University of Maine. He attended medical school at Albany Medical College and graduated in 2010. During medical school, he was honored with Dean’s Senior Research Award for his work on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Fronto-Temporal Dementia.
After medical school, Dr. Brandmeir completed his Residency training at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. He graduated in 2017. During this time, Dr. Brandmeir completed 2, CAST approved neurosurgical fellowships. One in Neurocritical Care and one in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery. As a resident, he authored over 20 peer-reviewed scientific articles including a randomized controlled trial and large, prospective cohort trial.
Upon graduation, Dr. Brandmeir joined the faculty at West Virginia University as an Assistant Professor in 2017. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 20222. He remains at WVU. During his time there, Dr. Brandmeir has split his time between his elective stereotactic and functional practice and his practice in neurocritical care and neurotrauma. In that regard he serves as director of the neurotrauma service line and serves as a neurointensivist in the neurocritical care unit. Since his appointment, Dr. Brandmeir has become board certified by the ABNS with a Recognition of Focused Practice in Neurocritical Care from the ABNS.
During his time at WVU, Dr. Brandmeir has been active in clinical research, authoring over 30 peer-reviewed clinical and translational science articles as faculty, with 18 of those being as first or senior author. He has also been invited to present as a visiting professor or grand rounds speaker to multiple academic institutions to present his research on various topics.
Dr. Brandmeir has also been consistently involved in organized neurosurgery including serving in a volunteer role as moderator, speaker, and abstract judge at multiple AANS and CNS conferences. He is currently the Secretary of the AANS Section on the History of Neurosurgery. He, along with other neurosurgeons from around the world, has also founded the Active CSF Exchange Society. This society focuses on the treatment of diseases of the brain via treatment with CSF exchange and continuous intrathecal therapeutics. The society’s aim is to foster collaborative research and provide technical guidance on this new therapy. He currently serves as president of the ACE Society.
Since being at WVU, Dr. Brandmeir has been deeply involved in education across the spectrum of both the hospital and the University as a whole. Since 2018 he has been the associate/assistant residency program director and was named Residency Program Director in 2025. In addition to this, he is the program director for the CAST approved fellowships in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery and Neurocritical Care, where he has graduated 5 fellows since 2018.
