Dr. Mark C. Preul for 27 years has been the Newsome Endowed Chair and Director of Neurosurgery Research and Director of The Loyal and Edith Davis Neurosurgical Research Laboratory (NSRL) of the Barrow Neurological Institute, a world class facility that mentors, coordinates and manages neurosurgical, surgical, and medical research, education, and training. A graduate of The Ohio State University, and the Medical College of Ohio, Dr. Preul did a surgical internship at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center with his neurosurgical training and fellowship at the Montreal Neurological Institute, McGill University. The BNI NSRL has been termed the foremost and most productive neurosurgical research laboratory in the world. It is the research facility of the BNI Department of Neurological Surgery for coordination of resident and fellow research periods and projects. It is the lead interface with academic, institutional, and medical industry partners for establishment and performance of neurosurgery research projects, science and technology development, testing, and education programs. Dr. Preul has trained over 150 neurosurgical research fellows, published over 500 articles and books, given numerous invited talks, and has been uniquely the 4-time chair of the AANS History Section. Dr. Preul and his research fellows have won numerous awards for their work. He has worked with engineers and neurosurgeons on new device and technology development, and coordinated extensive BNI surgical training courses and corporate training programs to demonstrate new and upcoming medical technology.
