Research Associate
Department of Neurosurgery, University of Utah
Sama Noroozi Gilandehi, MD, is a Research Associate in the Mahan Lab within the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Utah. She earned her medical doctorate from Guilan University of Medical Sciences in Iran and is committed to advancing basic and translational neurosurgical research, with a focus on spine and peripheral nerve injury.
Under the mentorship of Dr. Mark Mahan, Sama investigates pathophysiologic nerve regeneration and neuroma formation. Her preclinical work leverages animal models of peripheral nerve injury to define mechanisms of injury and regeneration and to identify predictive biomarkers of functional recovery.
Clinically, her research evaluates patient-centered outcomes and quality of life following peripheral nerve and spine surgical interventions. In parallel, she is studying the molecular and cellular landscape of human neuromas to identify pain-associated gene programs and cell states that may drive neuroma formation and neuropathic pain.
Dr. Noroozi Gilandehi’s long-term goal is to translate mechanistic insight into actionable diagnostics and therapeutic strategies that improve care for patients affected by debilitating nerve and spine conditions.
