Originally from the Washington, D.C. area, Dr. Welch received educational degrees from Morehouse College and his Doctor of Medicine, the Howard University College of Medicine, George Washington University Medical and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He has been a neurosurgeon on the Faculty of the University of Texas Southwestern since 2006.
Under his leadership, state-of-the-art facilities were constructed on the UTSW campus for the purpose of physician training in neurosurgery. In 2017 & 2021 he led the design of unique hybrid operating theates that allow for the combination of surgical and endovascular techniques to treat challenging cerebrovascular cases.
As an expert on the topic of the surgical and endovascular management of cerebrovascular diseases and stroke, Dr. Welch’s has given over 60 invited lectures and co-authored more than 120 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters on the topics of cerebrovascular disease. In recognition of his contributions to the field he was awarded the inaugural Duke Samson Chair in Neurological Surgery in 2015.
Dr. Welch is an active member of multiple national neurosurgical societies. He served as Chair of the AANS/CNS Joint Section on Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery from 2019-2021.
